NEW ZEALANDER IN TROUBLE.

Charles Brown, a young married man, j pleaded guilty at Darlingharst Sessions < to a charge of having, while employed as a clerk in the New South Wales Children's Relief Department, embezzled I the sum of £73 17/, the property of the department. Mr. White, who appeared for the ac-1 cused, said that "Brown was well-known and respected in "New Zealand. When he arrived here he obtained employment in the State Children's Department at £2 2/ per week. In his struggles to -keep a wife and three children on this j 6mall salary, he made his first slip. A c iditor threatened him with legal proceedings, and, fearing he -would lose his '^^ position, lie embezzled £6 10/> -nd in order to fi-et this money back he started backing horses. Before the shortage in the cash was discovered, the accused went to the proper authority, and voluntarily confessed his guilt.

His Honor Judge Murray said he was sorjry to say he must impose some sentence. If he could deal with the accused without regard for the public, or other possible offenders, he would certainly be inclined to say, "Go, and sin no more." After expressing sorrow for the accused's family, his Honor sentenced Brown to three months' hard labour in Goulburn Gaol, remarking that the sentence was the lightest he could impose, and was quite inadequate to the offence.
