"BOOKIE" ROUGHLY HANDLED

fßj Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.); THAMES, this day. At Puriri races yesterday, a bookmaker from Auckland had a rough experience. He refused to pay out in one race, but returned the amount of the investments to the backers, stating that he would pay the balance later on. This balancing did not suit the investors, and they proceeded to give the man a rough time. He was buffeted and kicked about the course, and eventually the police protected hdm. He was escorted to his hotel by a constable, and followed by a large number of people. On arrival at the hotel, the bookie managed to elude the crowd, and escape in the semidarkness. He will certainly remember his experience at Thames.
