ATTEMPTED SAFE ROBBERY.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. An unsuccessful attempt was made to break open a safe in the office of the Thames Gas Company sometime between midnight and 4 o'clock this morning. Between theso hours no employees are at work, and, taking advantage of their absence, some person or persons effected an entry and attacked the safe with implements obtained on the premises. A hammer, screwdriver, and iron bar were used to prise the safe door off its hinges. This attempt proved unsuccessful, and it is presumed that the burglars were alarmed when the men went on shift this morning at 4.30, and then decamped. The safe contained £200, money collected for gas accounts, but none of it was taken. The police are investigating the affair.
