A GOLDFIELDS DAM.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PAEROA, this day. The Kauri Timber Company's application for the right to erect a dam about nine miles above Karangahake, on the Waitawheta stream, came before Mr. Warden Burgess to-day. Mr. Porritt appeared for the applicant company, and Mr. Andrew Hanna for the Talisman G.M. Company, who objected on the grounds that the proposed dam would endanger their workings. Evidence was given for applicants by Messrs. E. F. Adams and A. White, in whose opinion the dam would be entirely safe. Mr. Adams pointed out that special precautions had been taken in the designs of the dam, which would cope with at least five times the volume of water likely to be required of it. Mr. J. Rbbb, manager of the company, deposed, that there was a large quantity of kauri above the dam, and 'it was absolutely necessary to construct the same in order to convey the timber down. Messrs. Nesbitt, J. H. Steedman, Slator, and p. Faithful! gave corroborative evidence. For the objectors H. Stansfield and' J. McCombie gave evidence as to the great danger of the proposed dam to the Talisman mine, both as to life and property. The. Warden reserved his deoision-until next Thursday, when he will deliver it at the Thames.
