A HANGMAN KILLED.
(By Telegrapb.—Press Association-) WANGAOTI. Tuesday. The hangman, Tom Long, was killed while felling busk at Kauangaroa to-day. Long has been hangman for many years, but, fortunately, there has never been any great call for his services. There-.-has not been au, execution in Auckland for > the past 15 years,. the passing of the extreme sentence pf'the law upon Scott, the Waitakerei -Murderer being the last upon ; s4|j«h the services of the hangman tioned. Long was a man with an unenviable record, and it is believed that the number of convictions against him total close upon two hundred. For the last 20 year 3he has lived amongst the Maoris at Kauangaroa. The deceased was in his younger day 3. a very powerful man. Much of his time was spent in gaol, and it occasionally happened that he was serving a sentence at a time when his services as hangman were necessary, and on sneh occasions recei»ed in recognition of nis work in thtt cana-city.
