Dr J. M. Mason, the Chief Health Officer, was expected to have returned to Wellington on Monday after his trip on departmental business to the Auckland province, but he had to alter his plans at the last moment on receipt of an intimation that sickness had broken out among the natives at Waikaremoana. He has now gone to inquire into the occurrence and is not expected to get back to the capital much before the end of the week.

Mr. (J. E. Purdie, a member of the Board of Education, gave an address this morning to the students of the Training (Jollege on matters connected with the conduct of a country school. He dealt first with the need for cultivating a harmonious spirit between the teacher and settlers, and then passed on to deal with matters connected with a school timetable. Mr. Purdie's experience as an inspector was placed at the students' disposal, and a very valuable address was listened to attentively. At the conclusion of the address a vote of thanks to Mr. Purdie, proposed by the principal, was carried with acclamation.

The opening of the Main Trunk railway between Auckland and Wellington has resulted in Mr Samuel Vaile writing to the Chamber of Commerce, inquiring how the railway accounts are to be kept in future; also whether Auckland will now be merged in the returns Wellington, Napier and New Plymouth. Mr Vaile points out that last year the gross railway revenue of the North Island was £1,271,----313, of -which Auckland contributed £484,470 or over 38 per cent. The grosa total tonnage was £1,671,669, of which Auckland contributed 47 per cent. In other words, Auckland contributed within 3 per cent, of half of the whole production of the North Island.
