COLONIAL GOVERNORS.
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL EARL CREWE'S REPLY. (Received 9-10 a.m.) ADELAIDE, this day. The Premier, Mr. T. Price, has tabled the dispatch of the Earl of Crewe, Secretary of State for the Colonies, with reference to the appointment of State Governors. The reply says that the suggestion that appointments should be manle from Australian citizens involves a far-reaching change, which could not, he considers, be entertained in any case unless it applied to all the Australian States, not one alone, and until public opinion demonstrated overwhelmingly in its favour. He adds, "No doubt muc'i might be said in favour of the Canadian system, under which the central Government appoints provincial governors. If the people of Australia desired a similar system the Imperial Government would, in all probability, be disposed to advise the King to meet their wishes."
