The enterprising 'burglar tried his hand at breaking into a wharf sh«d at Wellington between Saturdaj', after closing hours, and eight o'clock on Monday morning. When Harbour Board Storeman -Jeffries opened up X shed. i-rtirated on .I«>rvois Quay, opposite R. \V. Mills and Company's wholesale stores, on Monday morning, he discovered evidence of an atxempt to get into the shed by boring through the flooring. A Times" reporter, on examining the place, saw that one-inch holes had been made through Che four-inch floor timbers. The holes were bored =0 close as to form a continuous cut through the planks, and were maile m two tines which, when completed. - would have made a square opening , larjre ■ enough for a man to enter the shed. Ac--1 ce*s had been gained under the shed by ' j a door on the wharf at the north i end of the shed. The space underneath 1 I the building is about -lit 9in, and, there- * fore, the patient borer's position must ■ j hav-e been considerably cramped. Either . a largp auger or a brace and one-inch - bit had been ueed. A good haul would * have reirard«d the burglar if he had 1 gained entry, a.-s the shed contained. ; amongst other goods, eight large cases ' of Havelock tobacco, and 30 cases oi 1 c+aret and conatantia. The work mnst I Vntve proved too laborious, or else tht - trespastTfr w disturbed, as his task was * only half completed when he desisted.
