CLAIM FOR DAMAGE BY FIRE.
_ Mrs A. E. Hawke proceeded against Jacob Vermont, in the SAL Court yester- ' day afternoon to recover damages alleged Ito have been caused by a fire started by the defendant. The parties are residents of Henderson. The statement of claim alleged that the defendajii set on fire certain scrub on his ow_* Paction, and allowed the fire to spread to plaintiff's section, on which damage amounting to £19 10/- was done. Mr John.Alexander appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr W. Neumegen for the defendant. Plaintiff gave evidence that the fire endangered, her house, and that the furni. ture had to be temporarily removed. By the defence, it was admitted that I the fire was lighted upon defendant's \ property, and spread, but it was pleaded jin extenuation that the fire had been ' J lighted for cooking. His Worship said that if a man starts a fire on his property he is bound to keep it there. T__|_iMß3tion of damages was then proeeedeq *«*>_. The sum of 30/ had been claimei Sfir grass destroyed, and this amount was reduced to £ 1, but the other items were upheld. The case was adjourned till this morning.
