BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The meeting of. the Auckland Education Board this morning was attended by Messrs L, J.-Bagnail (chairman), A. R. Harris, G. J. .Garland,. H. j; Greenslade, M.P., J. D. McKenzle, J. Stallworthy, M.P., C. X. Barrlbali, C.-J. Parr, and G. Edgecumbe.
Grants;.—lt was reported that the following-, grants, had been made: Te Kuitl, enlargement school, £475 (£506 applied for); Whangarei Manual and Tecnnical School, £29... 11/11; Mangapapa, teacher's house, £375; Matakohe No. 2, teacher's house, £360. (£3_o • applied for); -l-tiere, teacher's house, £375; Te Oruru, teacher's house, £400. (£426 applied for);; Tirau, teacher's house, £400 (£430 applied for); Titoki, teacher's house, £355 (£375' applied for); Pbuta, £50' (£l2O applied for); Rawene, teacher's house, _4od (£498 applied t or);■;Hobsonville, enlargement of teacher's house, £150. (£155. applied for); Limestone Island,, enlargement teacher's house, £38. Some discussion ensued on the question as.to whether these.amounts would sunice for the. expenditure required if the workwere carried out during the winter months; it being suggested by Mr. Garlaiid that the , Government be communicated with on the matter if any such grant's should be below the estimates. No action was, however, taken, pending the: architect's report. Teacher's -elections.—The report of the Teachers' Selection Committee recommended, that the following appointments should Ibe authorised by the l-oard: Mr. F. S. School; Miss Gertrude Olarke, pupil I teacher, Aratapu District High School; Mr. 1 Martin D. Rohan, pupil teacher, P«nsonby; Miss __ice MI Worsley, pupil teacher, Cambridge D.H.; Miss Mary M. Boswell, pupil teacher, Waihi District High; Mr. Victor R. Yoss, pupil teacher, Tararu. The committee recommended that - school conrmittees be consulted in regard, to proposed _.ppointments as follows: Grey Lynn (assistant), Miss M. A. Shroff, Mrs. M. A. F. Macky, Miss •_. Milllngton, a_d Miss E. Cullens; Ponsonby (sixth assistant), Misses Adlna McCaHum, M. E. Ponsford, M. Ramson, lE. Cullens, and B. Cragg; Pakaru and Scoria.Flat (sole charge), Mr. John H. Harvey; Bangiriri; Miss M. J. Smith, Miss H. McGee, Mr.' J. T. Gough, and Mr. A. J. Sullivan; Katlkatl No. 3, Mr. J. S. Leech. The committee recommended that applications be invited by advertisement for the following appointments: Sole charge, Waharoa, Paengaroa, Kinohaku (Haylock's), Helena Bay. Niho Niho, Paranui, Te Ran Mauku; Opotiki, female assistant, at £90. The committee deferred their recommendation in regard to the selection of teachers for the following appointments: Paiaka (sole charge), Te Oruru (assistant) The report was adopted.
Department Grants.—Notifications were received from the Education Department reporting grants of £500 (usual annual amount) for technical training or teachers, and of £200 for the Manual Training School at Otehuhu, in connection with the woodwork, drawing, dressmaking, and other classes. It was decided to receive the former communication and to refer the latter to the Finance Committee.
Stanley Bay.—lt was reported that a site had been secured for a side school at Stanley Bay, the Minister • having provided half cost. The action was approved. New,- Schools. — Applications for new schools were-dealt, with as follows:—Batley (Kaipara), aided school grant; Frankton, declined; Pakanae (Hokianga), left ln the Chairman's hands; PIo Pio, deferred; Kakanul (Kaipara), Komokorlkl, Ohiwa, and Towai, referred to the inspector; Wairangi, referred to the inspector and the committee; Pukekaroro (Otamatea), aided school granted.
Finance Committee.—The report of Finance ' Committee recommended payment of the following accounts:—Administration, £500 7/4; building, £865 19/10; manual and and technical, £103 2/4. The committee also recommended payment of the following allowances:—Mr. G. A. Davidson, to Cambridge West (relieving), 13/T; Mr. G. A. Davidson, Aye weeks' allowance, £6 5/; Miss A. O. M. Woodford, to Manunui (relieving), 15/; Miss S. Wilson, Cambridge and Mangapai, £1 12/10; Miss E. S. L. Joll, Tairua to Waiuku (relieving), £1 8/; Miss J. L. Thorne, to and from , Tanpiri (relieving), £1 6/10; Mr. G. F. "Wight, from Taupo- (relieving), £1 0/1; Northc;ote, ,special»nllowance to 'School Fund, ~~£i0;~ Riporiul, special allowance to School Fund, £5. The committee had obtained from the Education Department, for the use of the Truant Officer, printed forms of a translation into Maori of summons notice or issue to parents of children who fail to attend school. The report was adopted. School Furniture.—The Department intimated that It would decline to make grants for cost of furniture for new schools, and that such would have to come out of the maintenance money. The letter was received.
