CAMBRIDGE NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) -CAMBRIDGE. Saturday. . Jjast year a floral fete was held here for the purpose of raising funds for helping the Borough Council to pay the £300 required by the Government for erecting a chiming clock in the new post ofßee tower. Everyone worked wel, and the result was' that not only was the balance required for the clock provided, but there was a surplus left over of about.. £11. On Thursday evening a meeting ; was held to decide what should be done with the surplus.. After some discussioncussion the following resolution was carried: "That, owing to the unfavourable season, it is not desirable to hold a floral fete this year, and that in the meantime inquiries be made as to the desirableness of holding either a floral fete in November next or a carnival in Easter of next year. The meeting then -adjourned until the 3rd of April, by which time the Chrysanthemum Society will have decided what it .will do in the matter of holding its show this year. Last evening the Chrysanthemum Society held a meeting to consider what should be done about holding a show this year. There was a fair attendance. Mr. Ttios. Wells, the president; briefly stated the reason why the meeting liad been called, namely, to decide whether or not a show should be held this year. He aiso stated that after this season he should retire from taking an active part in the affairs of the Society, for he felt it was more than he could attend to; and growing the plants for the members was much more trouble than many were aware of., He then aekod those present how many blooms tßey thought they could exhibit this year, and the nmnber mentioned warranted the show being helfl, so it was decided to hold it on Friday, and Saturday, the 23rd and 2-ltli of April next. It will not be as large a show as usual, for the drought and the hordes of caterpillars have: done considerable damage to the plants. It is not yet certain if the Farmers' Club will hold a root-show-in connection with the clu-ysanthemurn one,- as has been their custom of Ijtte.bnt that matter will be decided at-a meeting-to be held on Monday evening nest. ■ '.... v\Ve have suddenly gone from the middle b£ summer Into winter, with cold rain and a southerly wind; This will stop the growth of .the. grass and make the supply of winter £eed short.. .:
