SERIOUS ASSAULTS.
TWO PALMERSTON CASES. £100 FINES AND BIG SURETIES. (By Telegraph.—l.ess Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. At the Supreme Court this morning, before Mr. Justice Cooper, William Waugh, charged with intent to do bodily harm to Constable Connor, was found guilty. He was fined £100, and was ordered to pay the cost of the prosecu' tion, or in default two years' imprisonment. He was also bound over to keep the peace for two yea in £200 and two sureties of £100 each. The prisoner was ordered to be detained till the fine was paid and sureties found. The affair took place in December last. The constable was endeavouring to arrest Waugh for drunkenness, when the latter stabbed him with a knife. His Honor stated that he would not send Waugh to prison on account of extreme old a<*e and good character, as he considered such punishment was disproportionate to the evidence. Charles Fitton, charged with asault, with intent to do grievous bodily harm, * TT Z! th havin _ caused bodily harm to William Roach, was fined £100, and was ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, in default two years' imprisonment with hard labour. Accused was also bound over to keep the peace ; for three years, himself in £500 and two sureties of £250 each. The order for imprisonment was suspended for a week to allow Fitton time to pay the fine and find sureties.
