■ ■ (By Telegraph.—tress ABsociation.) OTAGO SCHOOL OF MINES. DUNEDLN, Monday. The University Council held a special meeting this afternoon to consider the tenders received for the erection of the new school of mines. Dr. Shand said that at the kist meeting of the Council it was found that the lowest tender considerably exceeded the amount of £4000 granted by the Government for the erection of the building. Application was made to the Government for an additional £ 1000, and Cabinet had authorised this expenditure. There would not now be any difficulty in the way of accepting a tender, and at once proceeding with the erection of the buildings. The tender of Gabriel Hodges, amounting to £4363, was accepted. It was also decided to ass Government to pay the £5000 authorised before March 31.

MAORI CONFESSES FORGERY.

GISBORNE, this day. In the Police Court to-day a young native named Nepia Jones Haua pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence at Auckland, on a charge of forging a cheque for £7.

THE NEW DAIRY SCHOOL.

PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. The Premier, who passed through Palmerston North yesterday, was met at the station by a large number of representatives of local organisations and residents, who expressed gratification at ' Palmerston having been selected as the site for the dairy school. The Premier, replying, said Cabinet, in arriving at its decision, eliminated all offers of land and money, and sought to confine the question of site to one of the greatest benefit upon the dairy community as a whole. Men of experience all the world over had selected towns as sites for dairying schools, and he thought Palmerston North was especially favourable for a dairying community, apart altogether from the students at the school.

NO-LICENSE (-XDNIj-SKENCE.

DUNEDIN, this day. At a conference of no-license workers last evening a proposal was carried to the effect that the No-license Party i 3 entitled to determine the issues on the licensing question by a simple majority. It was also decided to support the New Zealand Alliance in asking Parliament that a Dominion no-license vote should be given to the people, and be taken on the same day as the local option vote, and that this should also be decided by a simple najority. The newssity of altering laws so that tho licensing vote should be taken at every Parliamentary election, irrespective of whether three years had elapsed, was also affirmed. ACQUISITION OF LARGE ESTATES. OAMARU, this day. | At the request of the Minister for i Lands, Teschemaker's Kauroo es- I tate has been placed under offer to the i Government for closer settlement. The I acreage of freehold is approximately ' 19,113 acres, and 750 acres of Crown,' land, and GOO acres held rrom the school commissioners have already been subdivided into seven farms ranging from SOO to 5000 acres. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. CnRISTCHURCH, this day. Hamilton Shaw, a man aged 65 years, was found in a dying condition in an outhouse in Victoria-street, and died while being removed to the hospital. Evidence j given at the inquest showed that death was caused by cardiac failure and chronic Bright's disease. The City Surveyor issued during February 56 building permits, representing buildings valued at £33,435. During February the following stock were slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs: Cattle 1031 (Condemned 13); sheep, 7470 (condemned 7) ; lambs, 1937 (condemned nil); pigs, 477 (condemned 3); calves, 368 (condemned nil).
