NGARUAWAHIA REGATTA.
(By Telegraph. -- Own Reporter.) NGARUAWAHIA, this day. The first time for many years Ngaruawahia wan favoured with ideal weather for the annual aquatic carnival, and the attendance was consequently very large. The early train from Auckland was crowded, large numbers joining en route The banks of the Waikato River were linod by thousand.* of spectators, visitors from the surrounding country being present in full force in every variety of vehicle. The Maoris were also much in evidence—indeed, never before has so many been seen at Ngaruawahia. The entries in the rowing races by the Auckland clubs were very disappointing, only eight crews competing, exclusive of the single sculls. Mr. H. Booth was starter for the rowing races, and Mr. B. D. Hewett I and R. Bollard judges. Proceedings be- | gan with a parade of war canoes, which j was an imposing spectacle. His Exceli leney the Governor telegraphed his reI grets at being unable to attend, and ! hoped there would be good sport, j Maiden Fours. 10 stone and under, one i mile. — Waiteinata (Sealc). Bridson. Heath, Bond) 1. Hamilton _. Rotorua 3. Won by two lengths. West End and Ngaruawahia also started. The Waitemata crew were the first to show out, the other live being bunched. Waitemata was never headed, but there was a great race lor third place. Ngaruawahia was fourth, and West End last. Maiden Fours (open), one mile: West End (Dixon. Hennelly, Grundy. Dickesonl. I; Waitemata. 2; Hamilton. 3. A great race. Won by a canvas. Also started: Ngaruawahia and St. George's. Junior Fours 1J miles: West End (Carter. Kelly. Biomrieid, A. Carlaw), 1; Ngaruawahia also started. West/TEnd were in front all the way and won by two lengths.
