RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS.
SOME KNOTTY QUESIIOI.S. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIES, thi? day. The question of, Bible reading in schools . was discussed by the Education Board last, - night. The matter was brought up by ttti inspectors, who asked for information a£ to the Board's intentions in respect to|' the following:—"The teaching in schools' shall be for five hours daily for five days in every week, except that in preparatory classes it shall be for four hours ferny."----(1) Does- teaching cover secular instruc- _ tion only, and in the subjects enumerated in sections 135 and 170 of the EducationAct T (2) Would the regulation be met by the taking out of five hours on one" day a week half an hour for religious instruction, say from 9 to 9.30 a_m.? (3) . As the preparatory classes are limited to a school day of four hours, is it compe- " tent for the school committee to extend, the school day for these classes for religious instruction, and would teachers be justified in telling their pupils to atte«_j school for such instruction? The Board, after a lengthy discussion, answered the ' ' first question in the affirmative, and th» second and third in the negative.
