PROHIBITION AND TEMPERANCE LEAGUE.
The monthly meeting of the Auckland City Prohibition and Temperance League . was held last evening in the Alliance : Rooms. The following resolutions were a passed unanimously:— "That the thanks of the League be con--0 veyed to the Aucklaud City Council, who f by their voting, excluded intoxicating liquors from the pavilion of Victoria Park." "That in respect to Commissioner Dini- nie's letter to the Secretary of the Licensed i. Victuallers' Employees of Christchurch, dati. Ed Wellington. February 2S. 1908, we direct the attention of the Executive of the N.Z. 2 Alliauce to the same, with the request for that body to take what action is deemed best iv regard thereto; it being in our opinion an attempt to unduly interfere ! with the independence of inspectors of police." ■ "This League views with alarm the ' spread of intemperance in the community, which is in evidence, not only hy general . observation, but by the almost daily Press reports, of its evil results. It congratulates the police on their desire to benefit * the public interest, by directing the atten- •• tion of the licensing committee to matters ~ that call for their care. The League noted 5 the so-called protest inserted by the Ll- - censed Victuallers' Association in the papers of the 11th lnst_. wherein they designate the publication of facts, deemed detri--1 mental to their interests, as an underhand t bombshell. Believing that the only effec- , tive remedy for the inevitable evils of the ;# liquor traffic is its extinction, we are determined to do our utmost to ensure its ' at the forthcoming poll."
