BODY FOUND IN THE HARBOUR.

The much decomposed body of a man was found floating in the Harbour yesterday morning, and an inquest touching his death was opened before Mr. I. Gresham at Gleeson'a Hotel this afternoon. Owing to the stnte in which the corpse was when picked up, the matter of identification was difficult. .Members of the crew of the scow Moonah, which was sunk in the harbour last Tuesday night, inclined to the opinion that the body wa_s that of Fred Smith, who was supposed to have been drowned on that occasion. They could not, however, give positive evidence r,n the point. Dr. •). Moir -aid that as far as he could tell, there wen l no murks of violence on the body, which had probably been in the water at least live days. From a sanitary point of view it was extremely undesirable that a body in such a stale of decomposition should' be removed from Dovonport to Auckland. It was a danger to the public. He considered that it would bo far better to deal with bodies in such cafes, close to tne spot where they were found. Besides this, the appliances in the Auckland morgue were not suitable for dealing with such cases.
