PICNIC PARTY IN JEOPARDY.
ELEVEN GIRLS FAINT NUMEROUS NARROW ESCAPES. MELBOT.RNE, January 3. On New Year's Night, at Burrumbeet, two horses attached to a lorry took fright and bolted in the direction of Wendouree Lake. The lorry was laden with picnickers, and consisted' mainly of women and children, who were in great alanm. No fewer than 11 girls swooned and feil off the vehicle, and as the horses continued their gallop towards the, lake a number of children were also thrown from their seats on to the ground. Miss Hayes, who lives in Ballarat East, was thrown against a tree and was rendered unconscious. Ar.other young woman who was thrown to the road with considerable force became insensible. Before the horses reached the lake the whole of the picnickers were upset oil' the lorry which was on several occasions brought into collision villi a number of saplings, which "were tern down. Finally the pole of the vehicle snapped, and the horses got free. The majority of the party escaped with light bruises, but the others were badly shaken. Among those vho osea-cd unhurt were a lady and her twin children, in amis.
