THE BARQUE VIKING.
; DRIFTS ASHORE AFTER COLLISIO-L The mystery of the identity of the . sailing ship reported ashore on the NoiIsland, Straits of Magellan, has been cleared up. She turns out to be the i small Norwegian barque Viking, built ii 1592. It will be remembered that she ■ was described by the whaler Fridjof -8 ■ a large four-masted vessel, and in con" i sequence four or five vessels of that description were put in the reinsurance list market. This is only another in- ; stance of the carelessness of many ship •■ masters drafting their reports of wrecks ! and casualties.—"2\.Z. Shipping Gazette i and Marine News." It will be remembered that the Viki-g ; sailed from Auckland with a cargo ol kauri gum for America, which waJ t valued at about £45,000. She was rer ported to have come into collision with ! the Atlas off Cape Horn about last July* ■ and the captain and his wife (the lattef ' being an Auckland lady) were lost, but ' the rest of the crew were rescued by the Atlas. It was stated at the tuns : that the Viking sank within twenty *■ minutes of the collision, and as she wM - loaded with kauri gum in cases, many 1 here thought that the vessel was hardy likely to sink so rapidly; a surnus* which, if the foregoing report is to h< i credited, has proved correct. NtM ' Island would be close to the scene of tut 1 collision. The insurance companies pa™ I £IS,OOO to the shippers, and it is tinu j derstood that an action is to be take* 1 j against the owners of the Atlas fol
