A fair amount of business was transit ted in mining shares on the' Exchange Jhis morning, and generally the tone was better than for the last couple of days. Waihi -hares recovered a little of the decline noted yesterday, "being sold ud to ltiD/6' and again at 160/. During the last, six weeks it is estimated that, fully £25,000 worth of Waihi shares have been sent here from London, and all iottnd purchasers. This is no doubt the outcome of the tightness of the money market in London. Talisman Consolidated shares changed hands at 51/6. 2\__. Crown shares tinned a little again to-day, being soid at 6/11 and 7/. An advance also took place in the price of Old liauraki -line shares, as high as 2/6 -ni 2/7 being paid. This is no doubt due to the mine being now unwatered enough to enable work to be started Shortly in the Bunker Hill section. Karangahake shares failed to maintain the recent rise, being sold at 2/, and again at 1/10 with further sellers at the latter price, and buyers offering a penny lower. Golden Belts were easier this morning, being sold at 2/S, and Champion contributing at 4/3. Transactions also took place in Mew Sylvias at 1/3, and 'ihr.mes at 1/4. Waiotahi shares also sold at 3/2. Investment stocks met with fair inquiry to-day. Buyers came in for South British insurance at 112/, but another 1/6 was asked. Kauri timber contributing shares sold at 9/1. Paul up Northern Steam were transferred at 17/2, and Taupiri coal at 20/3. N_Z. CEOWX MINES RETURN. The return from the Crown mines for the month of December shows a considerable falling off, and explains tne sudden drop which took place in the price of these shares yesterday afternoon- The quantity oi ore treated during December was 1449 tons, which yielded bullion wo-th £3bGl. 'lhis brings the total amount won from this -mine up to . £ 715,707. Included in this amount are 12 tons of ore from No. 13 level shipped to London for treatment- The assay value per ton was £U3. The total Cost for Iter -ember was £1 13/8 per ton, as follows:—Mine development, 5/9; mining, 12/95 nulling, 12/7; general expenses, 2/7. The ret_rn for November was £20,765, from 422S tons.
