THE FANNING ISLAND PURCHASE.
m (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) j WELLINGTON, this day. With reference to a cable message ' from London regarding the sale of FanI ning Island, Mr. Humphrey Berkeley. I who arrived in Wellington from Sydney | to-day, explained to a " New Zealand Times " representative that Father RouI gier purchased Fanning and Wellington I Islands for him. Mr. Berkeley was forI merly the owner of a half of these is ! lands, and now possesses the whole oi : them, with the exception of the portion jon which the cable station stands. The . sovereignty of the island is not affectec : through Father Rougier having figured lin the sale, for, though a Frenchman by birth he is a naturalised British subject For private reasons Mr. Berkeley got ; Father Kougier, who is a great persona I friend, to buy the islands for him.
