The Railway Department's exhibit at the Ghrlstchurcti International Exhibition has cost £2055, and £250 is being vo.tcd, this year to clear any further liabilities on that account. The activity of the Railway Department in turning out new rolling stock is indicated by a vote of £230,000 for the purpose, and the fact that £173,600 was expended last year. The usual- vote of £53,000x£0r utilisation of water power has been dropped. Ruakura Experimental Farm in the Walkato Is to be made useful as an education factor, by promoting places for a number of residential cadets, "£IOOO being set down to provide accommodation for uiem. A dairy school vote of £1000 Is proposed. A,home for "defective" children is to be -provided by the Education Department at Richmond, near Nelson, and £7000 is" the' amount allocated. In order to connect lighthouses by telegraph, £1200 is allocated. New accommodation house' at Mount Cook, £5600 ; new buildings and improvements at Hanmer Springs, £7500. The lands improvement account of £17,----500 (£21,350) includes £6000 for a stop bank and drainage on tlie Pinko Swniup, and £1200 for drainage of the Walhi Swamp (Maketu). £6OSI Is voted for roads to open up Crown lands in the Auckland road district. :
