STRIKE ON MAIN TRUNK.
» TWENTY MEN Dl-CLINE WORK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) '7 yvT_l___-NGTON, this day. A strike on a small scale occurred on the Main Trunk Line at Ohokune on Tuesday. Twenty men in a ballast gang, getting 11/6 a day, demanded an increase to 12/6. This was refused, and the men refused to continue work. Their places on the work were at once filled by others.
•For some time past the Auckland Gas Company has been laying mainsvin the Lake DJstrict, and last night the gas iwas supplied to the inhabitants for the first time, giving great satisfaction by its brilliancy and benefits over the previous oil lamps. The district is sup : plied by gas compressed at the Devonport Gas "Works, and forced to Takapuna through pipes of small size, thus effecting a great saving in firsfc : cost. In this, way it is possible to supply outlying districts with gas at much less cost than could be done in any other Sway. The installation is the only one of its kind, in Australasia, and its successful completion reflects great credit on the Gas Company's engineer Mr. Chenery Suggate). under whose personal ' gnpervision the work- has "been carried _»_&.
