WHANGAREI POLICE COURT.
» (3y Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHA.NGAREI, this day. Yesterday at the Police Court, before Messrs. Killen and Hutcfiings, J.sP., Paddy "Nolan, charged with having been drunk and disorderly, was fined £ 1 with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment. Thomas Brown, charged with •using obscene language in a public place, and being drunk, was fined £2 or fourteen days.
An unguarded cellar was the cause of a very unpleasant experience in Dunedin a day or two ago. Whilst passing one of the principal hotels in the busiest part of the city a young lady chanced to acknowledge a passing acquaintance, and before she realised it found herself in a beer cellar. The young lady was promptly assisted out of her unfortunate predicament, and though not seriously hurt, was severely bruised and suffering from shock. The Salvation Army In New Zealand has just laid the train for its yearly self-denial campaign. The Army sets itself a certain mark, which every soldier tries to reach. This year it is desired that _-«000 shall be raised in the self-denial week. Last year was a record for New Zealand—* 5-00.
