INTERPRETATION OF AWARDS.

The Clerk of Awards (Mr Dickson) ha 8 received the following interpretations of certain clauses in various awards from Mr Justice Sim:— AUCKLAND TRAMWAYS. The following clause in the Auckland Tramways Award was queried:—"Motormen and conductors on cars at outside termini shall be paid for the time they are waiting while traffic is suspended during church hours on Sunday." Question: Is the Queen-street terminus an outside terminus within the meaning of the abovementioned clause? Answer: The meaning of the award is tnat a motorman or conductor on a car on a Sunday is to be paid for the time he is waiting to resume duty while traffic is suspended during, church hours, and he must be paid for this time unless he is signed off at one of the company's depots. For the purposes of clause 3 any terminus not near one of these depots i s an outside terminus. AUCKLAND WATERSIDE WORKERS. In this award there is a clause reading: "In loading or discharging cargo a truck load for two men shall, as near as practicable, not exceed 12cwt, except in the case of a single package which shall be above that weight, and a truck load for one man shall, as near as practicable, not exceed s§cwt." The question asked was: "Does this clause apply to regulate the weight for slings of cargo in loading and discharging?" The following answer was returned.—"Clause 15 of the award deals only with the weight of truck loads, and does not regulate the weight of slings qf cargo in loading , and discharging." WATHI MINERS. In the Waihi Miners' Award there is a clause which states that the minimum, rates of wages shall be paid by employers respectively to persons employed in the capacities undermentioned, that is to say: Stone breakers or crushermen in charge of breaker, 9/ per shift; stonebreakers' labourers, 7/6 per shift.' The question asked was: "Does the rate of 9/ per shift apply to all workers that are at or about the stone breakers, or solely to the man in charge of the breaker?" The answer was: "Only the man in charge of the stone breaker is entitled to be paid 9/ per shift; the other workers at or about the stone breaker are entitled only to 7/6 per shift."
