HOKITIKA NEWS.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HOKITTKA, this day. The trustees of the Hokitika Savings Bank yesterday handed over a donation of £400 for the completion of the public library, towards which Mr. Andrew Carnegie has already contributed £2000. In doing so Mr. W. Duncan, manager of the bank, gave an interesting resume of the early history of the bank, dating from November, 1866. The library building is a brick edifice now nearing completion, and will be a very handsome structure. The Harbour Board will consult Mr. Leslie Reynolds this- month with reference to the preparation of plans for improving the entrance to the local harbour. The memorial to the late Dean Martin will be unveiled in the cemetery on Sunday afternoon. The Mines throughout Westland are complaining generally of the want of water, the winter season having been exceptionally dry from their point of view. Things have, however, been very favourable to settlers, and the dairy factories will make a start immediately, the Btock being well forward.
An engine atached to a goods train left the rails at Penrose this morning, but fortunately it was not on the main line, and traffic was not seriously impeded. Guard Fergusson, who was in the van attached to the train, ■ waa thrown against the -the van by the impact, and received a nasty wound over the eye.
