UNIVERSITY COLLEGE EXTENSIONS.
PETROSAL TO ERECT TEMPOEARY BUILDINGS. Messrs. Golsbro' and Wade, architects, wrote to the City Council last evenin", applying, on behalf oi the Auckland' University Council, for a special permit to erect temporary premises on a site ad- . joining the Choral Hall, on the northern boundary. The letter went on to state thai the framing would be of wood and the external walls of galvanised iron. The City Engineer reported that the site was within the city's inner or brick area, and that the application was, therefore, contrary to the by-laws, but as the building was to be pulled down as soon as the new university buildin™ was erected, it was for the Council to consider whether it would be in the best in terests of the city to grant the apolication oi- nof. Section 60 of the city bylaws provided for relaxing strict observance oi any provision under special circumstances, or modifying the same, provided that other ttrms that might he imposed were compiled with by the applicant. In the event of the Council granting the application, it should be on the distinct understanding that the University Council, in accordance with the principle laid down in respect to temporary buildings, should ba pirspared to pull the erection down within three months of receiving notice from trie City Council. J On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to grant the permit, subject to tha recommendations of the City Engineer. °
