S? ty rn oa Gas and Electrical Appliances. —The Town Clerk of Dunedin wrote asking, on behalf of the Southern City Council, that the Auckland City Council would co-operate in an endeavour to induce the government to reconsider the proposed imposition of a duty on gas and electrical appliances. It was decided to reply to the effect that- action aa suggested in the letter had already been taken. Drainage Scheme.—The Remuera Road Board wrote stating it assented to J:he resolutions carried at the conference of delegates of local bodies re a comprehensive drainage scheme for the city and suburbs. —Eeceived. Hobson Bay Sewage Board.—The HobBon Bay Watershed Sewage Board wrote notifying that the city was assessed at £60 6/6 for the year commencing April, 1907. It was decided to pay the amount. Application for Telephone.—A petition, signed by seven cab proprietors, requested the Council to provide a telephone for ■cab proprietors at the cab rank in front .of the railway station, and suggesting that the cost be defrayed by an extra fee on all cabs applying for a license. It was ■Li'ged that such a telephone would be of great convenience to the general public arriving by small steamers on wet days, as a cab could be quickly sent from the stand to the wharf or other place where it might be required..—The matter was reStorage of Calcium Carbide.—ln reference to an application from the firm of - Green and Colebrook for a license to store one ton of calcium carbide in an outhouse at the rear of their store in Gore-street, the superintendent of the City Fire Brigade recommended that he license be not granted, as unless completely isolated from all buildings the compound in question was exceedingly dangerous, owing to its tendency to' generate explosive gases ita peculiar nature maidng it very difficult for a brigade to deal with it—The application was declined. Electric Lighting.—The Engineer forwarded a report regarding the material required in connection with the electric lighting of '.he city, and it was decided to authorise the Engineer to order by cable the cables, meters, and instruments, and that the other matters be referred to the Streets Committee. Mr Tudefjtiope expressed surprise that the Council had not had this information before. Mr Knight said this alone would delay the installation or the electric light. Mr Somers said if the Council cabled at once, it wonld take three months to get these thinss out. Jervois-road.—On the recommendation of the Streets Committee it was resolved that the cabbage trees be removed in Jervois'Toad, between Wallace-street and Heme 'Bay-road. Steam Disinfector.—ln respect to the District Health Officer's suggestion that a steam disinfector be provided, the City Engineer reported that he had received a ; report from the Chief Sanitary Inspector, ! Iwhich shows that the Council is not re- I sponsible for the disinfection of infected I premises, or goods from same, but that j responsibility rests with the .District Health I officers. Under these circumstances it was ; a serious question whether the Counci. should accept such responsibility. In view t of the City Engineer's report It was resolved that no further action be taken. Streets Committee. —The following recommendations of the Streets Committee were adopted:—That City Engineer consult with ; the Harbour Board officials with a view to j seeing whether another site for the morgue ] cannot be obtained. C. H. Frankham, offer- i ing to sell a section of land in Richmond- i street, as an addition to Bayfield Park: . City Engineer to have survey made and j report, Auckland Harbour Board, stating ! that the City Engineer and Harbour Board I Engineer are reporting on the matter of extinguishment of riprian rights of land, tPonsonby foreshore. Auckland Harbour (Board, conveying resolution to tfie effect that plan marked "A," of proposed roadway between western boundary of Freeman's Bay reclamation and Mew-street be approvpd, and provided satisfactory arrangements can be made with the owners of properties for the surrender of their riparian rights, and that the City Council will pay one-half the cost of obtaining surrender of riparian rights, and of all other expenses incurred, including the cost of the work, the Board will undertake fHe same; also forwarding city and board engineers' report, and plan marked "A" referred to: Reply approving of the proposal as submitted, but before .committing the Council to any liability, information to be requested as to the amount of compensation involved. Auckland iFootball Association, applying. for use of Domain Cricket Ground for a Wednesday ami Saturday during the last week in Aug-1 Dst: Granted at a fee of £10 each day, plus ■■£.2 for advertising, on condition that the [play be on such portion of the ground as the groundkeeper may direct. Resolved that all winter games on the Cricket Ground cease after 31st August, 1907, for this season. City Engineer, reporting that he toad had land purchased by Council at Har- I tin's Point surveyed, and attaching plan | showing such survey, that exceptions in title to property have been pegged, and are , shown on plan: City Solicitor to have deeds j completed, but a deduction to be made in the price for the shortage of area disclosed Iby the survey. Waterworks Engineer, reiporting that from Press reports of the amended tariff, he noticed that cast iron jpipes, which have hitherto carried 5 per cent duty, are now levied 20 per cent. He considered some protest should be made by tie Council: Approve of the action already taken in asking the city members of Parliament to protect the interests of the local bodies in this matter. City Engineer, reporting that the increase In duty on electrical machinery and supplies will have a most untoward effect in regard to the Coun- : cil's electric supply department, and recommending that the Council should protest against the increase: Resolved to telegraph ■ the Government and the City members. j Smith's Bond-road.—With regard to the ' petition of J. M. Mennie and 14 others, as to repairs to roadway off Albert-street, by j Smith's bond, it was resolved, on the mo-' tion of Mr Smeeton, that the matter be re- . f erred to the Streets Committee, with power to act. Mr Grey objected, on the ground , ■that there was a resolution of the Council : which forbade the Streets Committee having power to act where the expenditure in- ; yolved was over £50. ' Leys Institute Committee. — The Commit-1 tee reported that Wm. Blakey's tender for | shelving had been accepted, price £17 5/; also acknowledging donations from T. W. Town Hall.—Some discussion took place as to the time penalty to be imposed in con- j nection with the erection of the Town Hall. ; Finally, on the recommendation of the' /Engineer, the amount was fixed at £50 per [week. Finance Committee.—The following recommendations were adopted:—Abattoirs: Your Committee recommend that, subject to sundry alterations suggested by the City Engineer in the plans and specifications, tenders be Invited for the caretaker's cot- ■ tage, yardman's cottage, office block, boiler j ihoose, etc., singeing furnace, pig styes, : etc., hide house, skin house, and roading, j copies of the plans to be supplied by the architect for the use of the Clerk of Works, ■without extra cost, and plans to remain the property of the Council.
