THE SYDNEY CRISIS.
ABORTIVE CONFERENCE. (By Cable.—Press. Association.—Copyright.)SYDNEY, July 8. The conference of the Steam Colliery Owners and Stevedores' Association and the Coal Lumpers' Union has proved abortive. ■ ■■■ When proceedings were resumed to-day the Secretary the Coal Lumpers" Union announced that the employers' proposals had been submitted to a meeting of the Union, which had unanimously decided not to work with free labourers, and also not to accept the proposed wages and conditions for night work. Mr. Byrnes, president of the conference, on behalf of the expressed regret at the men's decision. In the circumstances, the employers had no alternative but to decline "to proceed with the conference. He thereupon withdrew the offers previously made by the employers, and the conference ended.
Speeches made by the delegates of the Coal Lumpers' Union are not encourag-. ing to the chances of a settlement of the difficulty.
