AMERICAN NERVOUSNESS. ! DEFENCES STRENGTHENED. JAPANESE REASSURANCES. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyris&i) NEW YORK, July 8. America, is quietly strengthening her coast defences along the Pacifie,i and-is constructing a dry dock at Puget Sound. It is reported at Washington that America, proposes to purchase. from Mexico a naval station at Magdalena Bay, Lower California. The "New York Herald's" Manila correspondent cables that owing to peremptory orders from Washington, all Japanese working at the fortifications at Cavite and elsewhere in the Philippines have, been discharged. There is great excitement in,. the: Philippines owing to the announcement that a battleship fleet is coming to the Pacific The " New York World" appeals to "President Roosevelt not to commit a disastrous diplomatic blunder by sending a fleet,- and urges him to use his influence to compel the cessation of the flagrant crime of jingo journalism, which may inflame the national heart. LONDON, July 8. Leading Japanese journals deprecate the nervousness shown by America, and express a conviction that all trouble will soon be removed.
