EARTHQUAKES AT MANILA.
• | The steamer Taiyuan, which arrived at j Sydney on June 4, brought news from I Manila that a severe earthquake was es- ] perienced in the Philippine Islands on ! April 19. The inhabitants of Manila were j awakened at five o'clock in the morning i by a shock which lasted for about forty i seconds, and extended from the Caraballos Mountains in Xueva Viscaya, in the ' middle belt of Luzon down to Panay and; Samar. The centre of the earthquake was I in the Camarines, but was severest in Xueva Caceres, where almost twenty dif- ', j ferent shocks were felt. While there was! | no great damage to property in Manila' I many of the buildings showed the effect; ; of the earthquake by rents and cracks in \ | the walls and arches. There were no l i fatalities reported. In Xueva CaceresJ where the tremor was the strongest, the/ j tower and front walls of the San Fran-1 ' cisco Church went down. In the town of ;Le Lopez, near Lueena, Tayabas, many ! houses were wrecked, the flooring of the j bridge destroyed, and the walls of the ! church and convent ruined. A coincidence i which created much comment at Manila | regarding the earthquake, was the fact | that it occurred exactly on the anniver- | sary of that which visited San Francisco. j The shock in that city occurred on April I 18, which, being twenty-four hours later | in time, corresponds to April 19 in Manila.
