CHRISTCHURCH DRAINAGE DISPUTE.
„ EXCESSIVE RATING OF RURAL AREAS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Mr. W. S. Short opened an inquiry this morning into the working of the Christehurch Drainage Act. Districts in I the rural area claim that they have paid ■ in all £ 53,456 that they ought not to have paid, and that should have been paid by the sewage area. All the dis- ' tricts interested are represented by counsel. The capital amount alleged to have been wrongly paid is £37,538. and j the remainder of the claim is for in- j terest at -4 per cent- t' Counsel for plaintiffs said the board was fully alive to the fact that the rural areas were taxed unfairly, and it had made continuous efforts to do away | with the need for rating these areas, but had been unsuccessful in securing the legislation it promoted. The Board had oeen year after year advised to ap- ; ply for increased rating powers, and it i had endeavoured to secure relief for rural areas, but this was always op- i posed by the City Council and the city I members of the Drainage Board.
