MISHAP TO ORIENT LINER.
A NARROW ESCAPE. SAVED BY FORTUNATE WIND. LONDON, June 3. The R.M.s. Oroya, bound! from Australia to pjigland, broke down oil" Uahant, in France, on Saturday evening, and remained in a helpless condition there for three hours, while damage to her intermediate crank shaft was being temporarily repaired. Fortunately the wind was off the land. Subsequently she steamed to Plymouth and landed her passengers. She remained there for repairs. (Received 7.34 a.m.) LONDON June 3. Later details show that when off the Portuguese coast the Oroya encountered a strong wind, which hindered her progress. Just after she was round Ushant lighthouse a sudden and extensive vibration and the stoppago of the engines alarmed some ot the more timid passengers, who feared something had been struck. They were promptly reassured, but had the breakdown occurred a little earlier in the night the steamer would have drifted on to the rocks. As thing-3 happened the wind carried her seaward. Several vessels in the vicinity offered assistance, but this was declined.
