SCHOOL MATINEE.

The pupils of the Beresford-street School gave an entertainment in the Opera House on Saturday afternoon. The general excellence of the children's performance fully merited the support it received, the theatre beiug well filled in all parts. The choruses, dances, and physical exercises bore proof of careful training, and were carried out In a manner which reflects nothing but the highest credit on both pupils and teachere. Boys and girls were becomingly and appropriately attired, and the dancing, especially in the Highland fling. Irish gig, and sailors' hornpipe, for which Miss Daphne Knight was responsible, was carried out with a grace and finish far above the .'-uaal standard of school entertainments. Solos were successfully given by Master Tucker and Misses J. Lovett and F. Hunter, while the clnb and tambourine drill by the gir's, and physical and Hag drill by the boys, were attractive items, displaying careful instruction and rehearsal. The antics of au "awkward squad" and an imitation of waxworks, provided considerable amusement. Among some of the choruses, which were particularly well received, were "British Grenadiers," "Oh! Golly, What a I-ark," "Cotton Pickers." "Chinaman, Chinaman," "Little Waiters, "When the Boys Come Marching Home," and the double octette giving a well-known chorus from "Florodora." Miss Mcllhonc, one ot the lady assistants, rendered valuable assistance in the general arrangements and organisation of the performance.

FEBEO-CONCRETE CO.'S PICNIC

The employees of the Ferro-Concrete Company held their second annual picnic on Saturday. Unfortunately the appearance of the aky in the morning boded ill for fine weather, and consequently the attendance was not as good as was anticipated. However, the rain kept off, and those who ciiose to risk the elements spent an enjoyable day. The scene of the picnic was the favourite holiday resort, Home Bay, Motutapu. Luncheon -was held in a large ma ruuee erected on the grounds, the catering, in the capable hands of Mr Partridge, of the Strand Cafe, being all that could be desired. Amongst the toasts honoured were "The King," "The Day We Celebrate," "The Ladies," and "The Company." Replying to the toast of "The Company," Mr Moore ichief engineer of the company! expressed his pleasure at beiug present. He hoped that they would have many more such functions. They did much to promote good feeling between employers and employees. Married Ladies' Race: Mrs Seill 1, Mrs Markey 2. Married Men's Race: 11. Nicholson 1, G. Stevens 2. 120 yds Handicap: Martin.L Hawkins 2. Girls' Race: M. Foster 1, N. Harris 2. Boys' Race: H. Gallagher a, p. Dando 2. Sack Bace: J. Broun L W. Weir 2. The Bavarian Band was present, and enlivened the proceedings with same excellent music. The return trip was made in tbe Eagle, town being reached shortly after eight o'clock.

ENTERTAINMENT AT ONEHTJNGA.

A successful concert was held in the Public Hall, Onehunga, last Friday evening, by pupils and ex-pupils of the Convent School. The hall was crowded, and an excellent and varied' programme was contributed. Dances, part songs, and choruses were given by the pupils, and instrumental items by Misses Cutts, Turnbull, Moody, and Mr. Eowe. Songs were well rendered by Misses Glaniield, Winter, Leahy, Brennan, and Hodge, while the solos' in the pupils' choruses and part songs were sustained by Misses Glanfield aud Tapp. The second part of the programme was devoted to a dramatic performance, "Isoline, of Bavaria." A very creditable interpretation of the drama was given, the characters being sustained by the following: Misses-W. Scott Brown, Glanfield. H. Leahy, Smith, I. Cutts' S. Carleton, s Dobay, Dempsey, E. Tapp, J. Cunningham, A. Simmonds, M. Lahgford, M Vause, Shaldricw. Simmonds, Mitchell Brennan, F. Glanfield, and Masters Hotchin' Jeffrey, and- R. Kelly. The accompanists were Misses Brown, Simmonds and Brennan,. Messrs.. Tple; Johnson, Eowe, and Graydon. - '
