VULCAN-LANE CASES.
PLEAS OF GUILTY. Additional Vulcan-lane obstruction cases came before Mr. Dyer, S.M., at the Police Court this morning. The first to be called on was that against George Doing. Mr. Hackett (for the accused) said be had advised his client to plead guilty because the facts were almost identical with those of a recent case in which Mr. Kettle had convicted. He was aware that his Worship (Mr. Dyer) had in previous cases imposed finrjs of £5 to £10. Mr. Dyer: The circumstances were entirely different. Mr. Hackett: That is what I was going to point out. On those occasions the lane was thronged with a multitude of people who were alleged to have been there for betting. Mr. Dyer: My object in imposing large fines was also in order to clear the lane. A small fine would not have done that. Now., however, we have go* a Supreme Court decision, and I suppose the bookmakers will act in accordance. Do you happen to know what Is their intention? . Mr. Hackett: They will bow to that, decision. Previously they had daunea a right to use the lane. Mr. Hackett stated that Mr. Kettle had Imposed * fine of £1. .
