AUCKLAND'S TECHNICAL COLLEGE.
THE SAVINGS BANK GRANT,
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Heporter.
WELLINGTON. Thursday,
In moving the second reading of the Auckland Savings Bank Education Special Donation Bill, Mr. A. Kidd (Auckland Central) remarked that unlike many which preceded it the bill was not to empower a loan, but a donation. The Savings Bank Trustees proposed to transfer the sum of £10,000 out of its profits towards the building fund of the Technical School which was intended to form a memorial to the late Mr. Seddon. To show the interest taken by Auckland citizens in the subject of technical education, Mr. Kidd stated that £ 1600 had been subscribed by the public towards the building, which, was to be erected with the assistance of the Government at a cost of £30.000.
The Premier supported the Bill, eulogising the Savings Bank Trustees for their action, and suggesting that it
would be well if other institutions of a similar character -would assist in work oi the kind projected in Auckland.
Mr. Arnold (Dunedin) expressed the hope that in Committee the powers of the bill might be extended so that the trustees might make grants whenever they thought it necessary. The bill passed its second reading and comes before the House in Committee next Thursday.
