In the course of proceedings at the Te Awamutu Police Court yesterday, Constable Fraser informed Mr Northeroft, S.M., that drinking was rife among the natives in the King Country. Maoris frequently journeyed to Te Avramutu, and on their return by train the same day -would each carry two or three bottles of whisky in parcels duly labelled. The magistrate promised to represent the matter to the proper authorities, and endeavour to get the whole of the licensing districts of Waikato, Franklin, and Egmont gazetted under section 4G of the Licensing Act, to p"robabit the sale of liquor to Maoris for consumption off the premises. The section reads as follows: —"Every person, whether a licensed person or not, who supplies liquor to any Maori for consumption aS the premises within such parts of the colony as may be hereafter denned by the Governor-in-Council, and gazetted, is liable to a fine not exceeding £50." Joseph BathuTst, licensee of the Commercial Hotel, was charged with supplying with liquor a native who was already in a state of intoxication, and also -with permitting drunkenness on,. Ma premises. The magistrate reserved, his decision. Several natives were fined for drunkenness. Rewatu was fined £50 and costs 22/6, for supplying with drink another native, who was already intoxicated.
