HOBSON-STREET WHARF APPROACH.

DEPUTATION TO THE CITY! ' COUNCIL. A deputation from the Harbour Board J waited upon the Streets Committee of the City Council this morning to dis- ! cuss the approaches to Hobson-street Wharf. His Worship the Mayor pre- ' sided, and there were also present Coun- : cillors Farrell. Knight, and Casey, -with the Town Clerk. ! Mr Hamer (engineer to the Harbour • Board) stated that the present roadway was very restricted., having only 16ft. ou each side. The banks to his mind •were useless as well as taking up a lot :of room. The arrangements shown on ■ the plan submited would give them 34 instead of 1G feet on one side, and 31 ! as against 16 feet on the other, which i would practically duplicate the api proach to that part of the city. By ! moving back the present dock cottage, ; at the end of the Auckland Dock., a dis- , tance of 15ft., the existing awkward ; corners would be entirely removed, and : an easy sweep would be formed so as to i give a much improved approach between the wharf and the city streets. At the , present time there was no footpath, and • pedestrians had to wade ankle deep in , mud. In the new proposal he would suggest that there should be a kerb . footpath which would overcome trrls great objection, and at the same time protect the adjoining fences from collision. A proposition had been to rel move the existing embankments and substitute vertical masonry retaining walls, but the present proposition was to carry a length of the approach upon steel columns and bridge troughing. which would give a great advantage for cart headway underneath the approach into lines of possible streets that were laid out in connection any reclamation of land to be carried I out in the future. Asked if one side could be done, without touching the other, Mr Hauler replied that Mas hardly worth while. The cost would be about £ 1400. His Mayor said the work should be done at once, and a cood job j made of it. The approaches were not Jat all satisfactory. He would suggest to the roininittee that the work be agreed to at ottco. (Hear, hear.) AuckI land was going to iiKTea.se rapidly during the next few years, am) t lie Harbour Board were carrying out large improvements. Hi , tvvll understood it was very creditable to conserve finances as much as possible., but tin- amount now in- : volvcd was not. suph a large one, and was justified, especially as the Harbom 1 Board More agreeing !i> pay half. Tiif I traffic at the wharf was gntting very J heavy, and it would be cheaper in the ' • long run to do the work properly. Ik i J moved: "Thai, ns the result of the in ' I lerview with the deputation from the J Harbour Board, the committee agree tr ' the work proposed at a cost of £1400 half of which was to be borne by tin 1 Harbour Board.'' The motion was then put and carried unanimously.
