EMPIRE DAY.

Thursday," May 24th (Empire Day) ■will be observed as a public holiday by all the banks, insurance offices, and schools throughout the colony. The local municipal offices will be closed, and His Worship the Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers) invites the Auckland citizens to observe it as a public holiday.

At the Veterans' Home a banquet will be given the veterans at noon by Mr. W. Coleman. Afterwards the veterans will act as a guard of honour to his Excellency at the unveiling of the Campbell statue in Cornwall Park. In the evening there will be a concert organised by Mrs. R. Bedford and a party of ladies and gentlemen, to take place at the Home. His Excellency the Governor will be present, and tie chair will be taken by tae Mayor of Auckland.

The statue of Sir John Logan Campbell has now been permanently fixed in position upon its pedestal in Cornwall Park. The granite pedestal has been concreted to the altar steps which surmount the great rock base, and all the timber and tackle used in erecting the structure have been removed. The paths in the enclosure are in course of formation, so that everything will be in readiness for the unveiiing on May24th, winch will be performed by his Excellency the Governor
