MORE REASSURING OFFICIAL REPORT.
MUCH DAMAGE BY FIRE ON WATER FRONT. (Received 8.40 a.m.) "~** NEW YORK, April 22. Major-General Punston reports that the fire is not progressing to the west of Van Ness avenue (i.e., the residential side), but a west wind has arisen, and gives cause for less assurance. It is likely that the whole of the city to the south of Van Ness avenue (i.e., all the business quarter) will be destroyed. It is impossible to re-establish sanitary conditions immediately, and much sickness is apprehended. Other reports show that the fire on the water front destroyed many grain sheds before it was stayed, by means of sea water and the strenuous efforts of the sailors.
