Commerces' Department ; have- received the following .cable from the High Commisioner, dated London, ApriV 7:—Mutton: The market :is : quiet, as the result.: of heavy "arrivals. The, arrivals - for' January and two following months totalled. 196,243' carcases. The trade for all classes - has been very slow, and prices are :. barely maintained. Fine quality ia scarce.' The average price "for Canterbury; brands is 4|d, ; and' for other' than' Canterbury, 4jd per .lb. Lamb: The market is . weak, the supply exceeding'the 'demand"-'' The average price for Canterbury lamb/ is 51d, and ior.f other brands; 4|d per :Ib. Beef:' The ■ market is quiet. Supplies of River" Plate: beef .are ;heavy. : The ave_age price for New "Zealand hindquarters is'Sid, and forequarters, 22d per lb. Butter:' The market is dull, stocks are heavy, and buyers --are holding back expecting .prices to go lower. Some holders are forcing sales. The average price of choicest New Zealand butter, to-day Is. 98/. Danish is 'quoted at 109/-per cwt. -:There Is .good demand for cheese at -the prices l cabled" last week. The hemp market is quiet,-with a tendency in t favour, of buyers. The average: price of A g.f.a.q:, Wellington, spot, to-day, is. £32.' April and June shipments are quoted at £31 per ton.
