Price and Bulleid's, draper?, between Saturday night and this morning, by boring a piece out of the back of the door. They only got a small sum,, as the firm banked late on Saturday. A MATCH ON" THE FL©OR. HOKITTKA, this day. The premises of Mr. Ernest Peake, cabinetmaker, were partially destroyed by fire at nine o'clock this morning. The lire was caused by the accidental lighting of a match which was on the floor of the kapok room. The ilanies spread very rapidly through the machinery room, which was gutted. All the furniture in the showroom was removed. The paint and material in the workshop 1 was damaged by water and fire. The insurances amounted to £350 on the - building, plant and stock, and only par- . tially cover a loss which exceeded the I risk. CHRTSTCIITRCH TRAMWAY DISPUTE. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The trouble still continues among the tramway men, and a large meeting of motormen and conductors was held yesterday to consider the application of the merit and demerit system. The men ■complain that this method practically puts them in the hands of tho inspectors. While the system is theoretically good, it works out. badly in practice. They also complain of the recent ap- , pointment of a man from the North to supervise the system. Some of the more ardent spirits urged an immediate strike, but the counsels of the moro longheaded prevailed, and the Board will be approached on Thursday next by a substantial and representative deputation. It is understood that if no satis- ! faction is obtained the men will contemplate resigning in a body. W.C.T.U. OFFICERS ELECTED. j GRETMOUTH, this day. At the W.C.T.U. PREMIER VISITS CHATHAMS. WELLINGTON, this day. The Premier and the Attorney-Gene-ral left for Chatham Islands by the Tutanekai on Saturday. They are expected to be back early next week.
