THE MELBOURNE CRICKETERS.

MATCH AGAINST NEW _EA_L__vD. POOR STAND BY* TEE HOME TEAM. (By T-lejrfljih.—Own Corresponflent-j CH_I_CGHC_(_-L Friday. The match between the Melbourne Club representatives and New Zealand' was begun at Lancaster Park at noon yesterday. There was a. poor attendance, which improved in the afternoon, and the weather was cold. On form the game was expected to produce an interesting stiuggle, in view of good New Zealand performances with both bat and ball, but it didn't. Ollivier, on whom great hopes were set in some quarters, was clean bowled by Armstrong almost before having a strike, and this, strange to say, was the only ease of failure to score. If there was any hard luck, Lusk got his share of it, being smartly caught by McLeod when he had made three careful singles. Eaekeon's performance, although producing more runs, was not as pleasing as those of W. B. Smith and Tucker, who were inclined to force masters slightly. The fprmer_ downfall was brought about by McLeod's bowling strategem, the Auckland player, who might have profited by the other's experience, oeing caught in the slips. Dcwnes showed a few fair all round strokes in compiling 10, but he gave several chances, and was badly beaten by the bowling, eventually being held by a "silly slip." Tucker stayed in for a good term, and effected a couple of good scoring strokes before being caught at the wickets. Of the remaining three batsmen, Bozshall carried his bat. He hit hard and should not have survived the first over, but afterwards did creditably, as compared with his teamsmen. Put shortly, the team made a poor showing on form, and no batsman played freely. The -visitors' batting, with two exceptions, was similar to that of the New Zealand, although they were bowled quite unexpectedly both to themselves and to the spectators. Mailer had no time to show his batting ability, but \"aughan made his runs freely anc" quickly. Ransford was expected to give a clever exhibition, but after a cautious six was bowled by Downes. Wilkinson soon followed, and then matters became more lively in the partnership of Armstrong and McLeod. Armstrong toolsome time to get the measure of Malone's breaks, but once h«< lad done so the fieldsmen were kept busy. Betweei the wickets, with McLeod, he was very smart, and added numerous doubtful singles. If McLeod had hot suffered from a bad knee the score would have been greater, but he played 'a solid innings, like Armstrong, all round the wicket. The Melbourne captain played a characteristic game, and gave no chances. Scores: NEW ZEALAND.—First Innings. C. Hiekson. c Wilkinson, b McLeod. ."18 S. Redgrave, c Butler, b McLeod 3 H.
