DEATH OF FATHER MULVIHILL.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORXE, this day. The Rev. Father Mulvihill, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic who has been ailing for some time past, died last night. The Rev. Father Mnlvihill was born at Tarbert, County Kerry, Ireland, in 1867. He was educated at Killarney and Maynooth Colleges, and ordained in 1892 by the Right Rev. Dr. Walsh, Archbishop of Dublin. Father M_v__l went to Edinburgh, and officiated lit St. Patrick's Church in that city, and also acted in the capacity of chaplain to .the Marquis of Bute. Towards the end of 1895 he was compelled through failing health to relinquish these duties, and seek a healthier climate. He then decided to come to View Zealand, and arrived in Auckland the following year, shortly after the death of Bishop Luck. Father Mulvihill was appointed to St. Patrick's Cathedral, where be laboured for a couple of years. The other priests at the Cathedral at that time were the Rev. Father Croke, lately deceased, and the Rev. Father Buckley, now at the Sacred Heart Church, Ponsonby. In 1898 Father Mulvihill .was appointed parish priest at Gisborne, where he remained till the time of his death. Among the improvements he effected in the parish were the building of a magnificent convent and new parish schools, while the church and presbytery were renovated. The deceased was very popular in Auckland and Gisborne, and in the latter place he was very popular, commanding the respect and friendship of people of all denominations. The deceased suffered greatly from asthma, and while in Xew Zealand had had a. number of severe illnesses, which necessitated operations being performed. He had been laid up for some weeks prior to his death. The assistant priest at Gisborne is the Rev. Father Duffy.
