PREJUDICE AGAINST AUSTRALIANS.
(To the Editor.) Sir. —"Australian's" remarks on the above are unfortunately very true. jSince my arrival in Auckland, some 1 hree years ago, 1 have frequently had brought under my notice similar instances as that mentioned by your correspondent. It is rather surprising thai New Zeaso far forget themselves as u> hear any prejudice against people from the other side, when one remembers that it is not so many years ago (ISS7 to 1800) when many thousands of New I Zealain'cr- deserted "(tod's Own Coun- ' try" for the land of the "I'ndesirable.s." i and can it be said with any truth that I they were not heartily welcomed? I i really wonder, Sir, how many of our ' leading merchants remember this state [of things when summarily dealing with i the application for a position by an Australian. At the same time, Sir, I ndmit that there are many branches of business where should the applicant be from the "other side" he is snapped up with alacrity. Incidentally 1 may mention that figures published* by the Commonwealth officials for the past year indicate that some 2000 more people left New Zealand for Australia than .arrived here from there, showing . conI elusively that after all the land of the | kangaroo has its attractions for those of God's Own Country.— I am, etc.. I , JEX-VICTORIAN.
