MR BELLHOUSE AND DR. BAKEWELL.

j (To the Editor.) I Sir. —1 wish Mr Bellhouse would be more accurate in his statements. 1 had to correct him a short time ago, and now 1 have to do the same. Each time it costs mc a penny for postage. The least Mr Bellhousc can do is to send mc two stamps. | Jn his letter which appears in last night's "Star" Air Bellhouse says: "Dr. Bakewell argues that you cannot suppress the manufacture and sale of liquor by any legislative enaetnienf, and straightway he goes to the poll and votes for no-license." With characteristic inaccuracy Mr Bellhouse makes three mistakes in this .short sentence. Firstly, the letter with the argument was written after the poll: secondly, 1 have never anywhere asserted that "you cannot suppress the sale of liquor by legislative enactment." I have little doubt that if you were fo substitute for the present police, force a body of Prohibitionists of the Nonconformist type the sale could be suppressed, but it will never be suppressed by Irish policemen. Thirdly, I did not

"straightway go to the poll and vole for | no-license." I did ixjt vote at all. A J gentleman iv the polling booth politely | handed mc a little, bit of paner> contain- j injj certain asseveration*) about the | licensing of public bouses. Hone of ] them suited my views, so I quietly fold- I ed up the paper ami placed it in the | ballot-box without striking out any line. If you ask mc why I did not refuse the j paper, 1 may say that I did not like to hurt I lie feelings of the g«ntleman who offered it to inc.— I am., etc.. R. H. BAKI3WELL, M.D. \ Arthur-street. Onehnnga, March -22. 1906. )
