THEFTS OF BUTTER.
AN '•OUT-OF-WORK'S 53 EXPEDIENT. "Out of work and hard up" was the <s_cua» of William John Irwin, who pleaded guilty before Mr. Kettle, S._L, to-day to stealing four boxes of butter valued at £2 12/6 each, the property of Ambury, English and Co. According to Sergeant Hendry, the police prosecutor, Messrs. Ambury, English and Co. kept butter in a shed at their factory off Karangahape-road. The door was always open, so that milkmen could enter the factory during the early hours, and Irwin took advantage of the unfastened door to appropriate a box of butter. Three boxes were missed, and a watch was then kept, with the result that early this morning Irwin was seen to shoulder a box of butter and walk off. He was detained and given into custody. Irwin admitted the truth of this statement, and in reply to the magistrate said he sold the butter to various Queenstreet grocers, whom he named, telling them he got it from his brother up country. He realised about BJd per pound. Sergt. Hendry remarked that the grocers would not have bought the butter had they known how it was obtained. Irwin, being a first offender, was remanded until Saturday so that the Probation Officer could report.
