THEFT OF A CHECK.
A WHAIsGAREI CASE. A young man named Thomas Martin was this morning brought before Mr ! R. W. Dyer, S.M., at the Police Court, on a charge of having stolen a cheque valued at £19 10/, the property of Frederick J. Cory, from the Whangarei Hotel on January 18th last, and also with the theft of two postal notes at the same time. Chief Detective Maxsack prosecuted, the accused being represented by Mr Brookfield. Samuel Gray, secretary to the D.S.C., said that on the 10th ult. he signed a cheque for £ 19 10/ on the Bank of New Zealand payable to order, and sent it to their Whangarei traveller, Mi - Cory, by post. The cheque was the one produced. Frederick James Cory, the D.S.G. traveller at Whangarei, said that he stayed at Mr McMahon'a Hotel, WhangareL The letters for him were put in a letter rack, and the door locked. When they wanted their letters they went to the bar for tne key. His salary was paid monthly by cheque, which was enclosed in a letter. The cheque produced was one ■which he had not received when due. He had never previously seen accused that he knew of. Detective Shine said ne found the cheque in question upon prisoner when searching him. There were also upon him two postal notes for 5/ each. The accused made a written admission to him that he had taken the letter containing the cheque, and another containing the postal notes from the letterrack at the hotel. The prisoner pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence. Upon two other charges of theft a remand was asked by Mr Marsaek until the 14th inst., which was granted.
