SOUTHERN NEWS.
(By Telegraph.—Press Assodatlen.) CHAE&E OF INFANTICIDETXMARU, Wednesday. At.the Supreme Court to-day the last case on the calendar, a charge of infanticide, resulted iii an acquittal, on the ground of temporary insanity. Tb e circumstances were of a distressing nature. The young woman threw the body of the infant into a cesspit, and some, days afterwards removed it. She carried it some miles by train, and then threw it into a. well. She was ordered to be kept m custody pending the pleasure of the Colonial Secretary.
FATAL -ACCIDENT.
CHRISTCHUSCH. Wednesday
Sir. John Coop, of KAituna, met with a fatal accident last- night. Deceased had been out buying stock, and on the road home had in some way fallen against the wheel of the eulky he was driving, his- neck being dislocated. The deceased was most highly respected in the district. WANGANUI ITEMS.

At a meeting of tho Christinas Carnival Committee last evening it was decided to-hold another carnival next Christmas, and a sub-committee was appointed to go into the matter of arranging new attractions for the function. Tlie recent carnival resulted in a profit of £128. Miss C. McKenny, assistant-matron of Wellington Hospital, has been appointed matron at the Wanganui HospitaL
