Mr and Mrs C. E. Nelsoiir so well and favourably known in connection with the Geyser Hotel, are retiring from that establishment, arid will take a well-de-served rest, -which w>ll embrace . a trip to thp Old Country. Mr a.nd Mrs Kelson have, been associated with the "Geyser 7, /or the past fourteen years, during which period they have entertained visitors of all ranks from all parts of the -world, and have won the esteem of all who have had tW good fortune to meet them.

A movement is on foot to present to Madantf' Lilian Tree a purse of sovereign? as a testimonial of public appreciation of the good work she has done in music for Auckland. Madame Tree about to leave Auckland for England, ■departing at. the end of this month, and the presentation will be made a≤ soon after February 24th as possible. A- well-knOwii resident of Gisborne, Mr. W. D. Lysnar, who has been visiting Waikaremoana lately, has been interesting himself in the opening up of n direct road fo- tire Lake via Hanoraroa*, which brings Gisborne within 72 miles of tLe lake as against 111 miles via Wairoa. Asked how the proposal would fall in with the movement in the Waikato for road communication with. Gisborric,. "Mr. Lysnar said it would do-admirably IP, say, a stock track were made from the Lake to the- present Rotorua coikjh road, a. distance of only 17 miles, there would be at once a good stock route to Auck-land-and Waikato; the stock track proper keeps well away from the Lake road, which has really to b,? made, .as from Okahutia the scrub and bush, has only been "cleared along the road line without any "formation, which 'will require a clarge expenditure o.f money upon it to make it available for stock. TlvS Gisborne branch of the Farmers' Union on Saturday passed the following resolution: "That, as there is urgent need for an immediate stock route from Gisborue to tho Waikato and Auckland' markets, the Government .should put extra strength on, so at least to make a fctock track from the termination of the preppnt dray road, at th? far side of Lake Waikaremoana. towards the termination of the present coach road from Botorua, a distance of only about 17 miles."' .
On Saturday the final for the Cambridge Bowling Club's handicap singles was played, when Mr J. Rivers proved victorious ov,? r Mr A- White by 30 to 20.
Nelson had quite a Continental appearance, on the last night of the carnival week. In the evening a grand masquerade and battle of flowers were held in Trafalgar-street, and proved a gigantic success. Thousands lined the street, which was beautifully illuminated, and about 400 took part in the masquerade, the whole going with a. vim which culminated in a fitting climax to the carnival. The carnival committee are to be congratulated on the manner in which they carried out their duties, also the several committees, the carnival being on>? of the most successful ever held in New Zealand, whilst the hospitality of the Nelsonians has bceir most lavish- Tlie carnival of 1900 will mark an epoch in the history of the province named afte.r Trafalgar's hero.
